Time needed: about 2 to 3 hours (1 hr theory, 1 hr practical, 30 min questions)
PART A: THEORY
1. What is a computer?
A computer is an electronic machine that accepts data (input), follows instructions to process it, shows the result (output), and can store it for later. The word comes from "compute", which means to calculate. Today computers do far more than calculate: they play videos, send messages, run banks and control aeroplanes.
Data is raw facts such as numbers, names or pictures (for example "45", "Ravi"). Information is data after it has been organized so it has meaning (for example "Ravi scored 45 marks"). A computer turns data into information.
2. The IPO cycle (Input - Process - Output)
Stage
What happens
Example: calculator app
Input
You give data
You type 5 + 3
Process
Computer works on it
CPU adds the numbers
Output
Result is shown
Screen shows 8
Storage
Result is saved
You save it in a file
Remember: A computer does exactly what it is told. It has no common sense of its own. Instructions given to a computer are called a program.
3. Characteristics of a computer
Speed: performs millions of operations every second.
Accuracy: gives correct results if the data and instructions are correct. (Wrong input gives wrong output: GIGO, Garbage In Garbage Out.)
Diligence: never gets tired or bored, can work for hours without a drop in quality.
Storage: can keep huge amounts of data safely.
Versatility: one machine can type, draw, play music and calculate.
No IQ: cannot think by itself; it needs instructions.
4. Short history
Period
Technology
Features
1940s-50s (1st gen)
Vacuum tubes
Huge, hot, costly
1950s-60s (2nd gen)
Transistors
Smaller, faster
1960s-70s (3rd gen)
Integrated Circuits
Even smaller, cheaper
1970s-now (4th gen)
Microprocessors
Personal computers, laptops
Present and future (5th gen)
Artificial Intelligence
Learning machines
Early pioneers: Charles Babbage designed the Analytical Engine and is called the "father of the computer". Ada Lovelace wrote the first algorithm for it.
5. Where are computers used?
Education: online classes, e-books, exams.
Banking: ATMs, UPI, net banking.
Hospitals: patient records, scans (X-ray, MRI).
Railways and airlines: ticket booking, schedules.
Offices: letters, accounts, presentations.
Entertainment: movies, games, music.
Government: Aadhaar, tax filing, certificates.
Home: smart TVs, washing machines, phones.
6. Types of computers by size
Type
Description
Example
Supercomputer
Fastest, used for weather and science
PARAM Siddhi-AI
Mainframe
Serves thousands of users, banks
IBM Z series
Desktop / Laptop
Personal use
Home PC, office laptop
Tablet / Smartphone
Portable, touch based
Android phone
Embedded
Hidden inside machines
Washing machine chip
7. Advantages and disadvantages
Advantages
Saves time
Reduces paperwork
Connects people
Stores large data
Disadvantages
Health issues from long use
Needs electricity
Data theft and viruses
Can reduce physical activity
PART B: PRACTICAL
Do every task on a real computer. Doing is the only way to learn.
Task 1: Look around your home and list 10 devices that contain a computer (phone, TV, AC remote, etc.). Write whether each is input, output or both.
Task 2: Take any simple activity, for example 'making tea', and write the Input, Process, Output, Storage steps.
Task 3: Write 5 examples of DATA and convert them into INFORMATION. Example: Data: 80, 72. Information: 'Anita scored 80 in Maths and 72 in Science.'
Task 4: Draw a timeline of the five generations on paper, with one line for each.
Task 5: Visit a shop, bank or hospital (or imagine one) and write how a computer helps there. Minimum 5 points.
PART C: QUESTIONS
Multiple choice (click an answer)
Q1. Computer comes from the word 'compute' meaning?
Answer: Compute means to calculate.
Q2. Raw facts and figures are called?
Answer: Data is raw, information is processed data.
Q3. GIGO stands for?
Answer: Wrong input produces wrong output.
Q4. Which technology was used in the 1st generation?
Answer: 1st generation used vacuum tubes.
Q5. Father of the computer is?
Answer: Babbage designed the Analytical Engine.
Q6. Which is NOT a characteristic of a computer?
Answer: Computers have no IQ of their own.
